OUR MISSION

Incantare strives to highlight the musical and cultural connections of underexplored musicians from the Renaissance and early Baroque periods, especially music by composers, singers, and instrumentalists from marginalized communities in early modern Europe. A shared passion for this music and historically informed performance brought the ensemble together. The group strives to discover, research, transcribe, teach, and perform works that may not have been heard since their conception.

The consort of sackbuts and violins has a long history and a unique sound that incorporates the vocal qualities of both instruments while retaining each of their distinct timbres, making it the perfect medium for performing the beautiful works from this rich musical time period.

FEATURED PROGRAM:

EXILE

In partnership with Rutgers University, the American Society for Jewish Music, the Jewish Music Forum, and the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music, Incantare proudly presents EXILE. Our first major collaboration highlights Jewish music as it shifted and melded with traditions in England, Germany, Italy, and Poland. We explore the influences of Italian, German, and eastern European music and Jewish culture, highlighting Jewish musicians, the non-Jewish composers they influenced, and composers who inspired innovations in Jewish composition. The purpose of this project is to highlight the mutual influences of the early modern European Jewish experience – to break down preconceptions of Jewish music and culture and explore the implications of diaspora on Jewish artistic legacy.

CONTRIBUTE

Your support helps us achieve our mission to bring our music to as many communities as possible throughout the United States and beyond. Your donation to Incantare allows us to expand our performance territories in order to make our concerts and educational programs accessible to all. Since our members make their homes all over the US, it also helps us to travel, rehearse, and develop our programs together. Individual contributions also help us keep our ticket prices low so we can make our concerts available to anyone and everyone!

Incantare is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of Incantare must be made payable to Fractured Atlas only and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
